Roanoke is a small city in far southwest Denton County where SH 114 and SH 170 meet, with a small part of the city reaching into Tarrant County. Its story starts with the Medlin Settlement on Denton Creek in 1847. When the Texas and Pacific Railroad laid tracks through the area in 1881, a railroad surveyor named the new town after his hometown of Roanoke, Virginia. Roanoke incorporated in 1933 and absorbed the neighboring town of Marshall Creek in 2007. The city had about 9,700 residents in the 2020 Census.
Roanoke is best known for food: the Texas House of Representatives designated it the Unique Dining Capital of Texas in 2009, and its historic Oak Street is lined with locally owned restaurants. It sits next to the fast-growing Alliance corridor, with quick access to Fort Worth, Southlake and DFW Airport.
About 35 homes are listed in Roanoke, from about $290,000 to $1.8 million. The average list price is about $760,000, at about $275 per square foot. For single-family homes, about 8 are priced under $500,000, about 14 are between $500,000 and $800,000, and about 13 are over $800,000. About 13 are single-story and about 6 are new construction. Based on recent listings, Briarwyck and Fairway Ranch have many of Roanoke's larger homes from the 2000s and 2010s, often in the $600,000s to $900,000s. The Parks of Hillsborough, Meadows of Roanoke and Meadow View are established neighborhoods with some of the city's lower prices. Highlands Glen and Marshall Creek have newer homes, and the streets around Oak Street in Old Town Roanoke mix older homes with new custom builds.
Roanoke is served by Northwest ISD. Elementary students attend Roanoke, Wayne A. Cox, J. Lyndall Hughes or Granger elementary schools, then Medlin or John Tidwell middle schools, and most high school students attend Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club. Assignments change as the district grows, so confirm the schools for a specific address; we'll check it for any home you're considering.
Oak Street is the heart of town, with dozens of locally owned restaurants, the Roanoke Visitor Center and Museum, and the Evenings on Oak Street summer concert series. Families can head to Hawaiian Falls Roanoke water park, the Roanoke Skatepark and city parks.
Alliance Town Center, Texas Motor Speedway, Southlake Town Square and Grapevine Lake are all a short drive away.
SH 114 and SH 170 meet in Roanoke, and US 377 runs north and south through town. SH 114 heads east toward Southlake, Grapevine and DFW Airport, and SH 170 connects west to I-35W and the Alliance area. Northwest Regional Airport, a general aviation airport, is about two miles north of downtown.
